Ivrit - עִבְרִית

April 2025

Year 6 started the new term by joining a live virtual tour of Ben Gurion's home town. The guide took them to his kibbutz and exposed the children to his life in his later years. It was a wonderful opportunity to learn more about this significant figure and important man in Jewish history, especially in the run up to Yom HaAtsmaut. The children later researched other significant Israeli figures, filling in a fact file and preparing for their activities on Yom HaAtsmaut where they made Mood Boards and Guess Who games of these characters.

March 2025

Year 6 worked hard this term preparing their price lists and shop fronts in Ivrit for the Shuk HaKerem - an annual exciting event where the children not only bring to life their learning, but also welcome children from the whole school to buy their products (there was a competition amongst the stall owners to make the most money in shekels). Kol HaKavod Year 6!

They have also spent a number of Ivrit lessons learning Hebrew songs and poems in preparation for the Tekkess they will be presenting for Yom HaZikaron next term. They have risen to the challenge and worked extremely hard on the Ivrit words and meanings, showing maturity and resilience.

February 2025

Year 6 have had a busy half term. They had the privilege of watching a wonderful and meaningful play called The Champion of Israel - אלוף העולם performed by the Israeli Theatre company who came to Kerem. They discovered the true story of Omer Smadja, the judoist who became an Olympic medalist. They learnt many words and phrases in Ivrit before the show to help them understand.

They have also been working on the topic 'Kniyot' - Shopping-  קניות . They can now ask how much an item costs and say in Ivrit what they would like to buy from a certain shop. They will soon be ready to plan their own stall for the Shuk HaKerem (Kerem market).

The children have continued to keep in touch with our partner school in the north of Israel -Moreshet. They spoke to the children on zoom and planned questions for them in Ivrit.
The last week of the half term was all about our special project ‘The Many Faces of Israel’. We focused on the aliyah of the Moroccan Jews since 1948 and the children listened to a speaker who spoke of her first hand experience leaving Morocco and making aliyah to Israel. They also learnt about their culture, language and important symbols and created their own name plates in the Moroccan Judeo Arabic language. It was a truly wonderful and enlightening week delving into Israeli culture and learning a lot about this particular community.
