April 2025
Year 5 started the new term by joining a live virtual tour of Ben Gurion's home town. The guide took them to his kibbutz and exposed the children to his life in his later years. It was a wonderful opportunity to learn more about this significant figure and important man in Jewish history, especially in the run up to Yom HaAtsmaut. The children later learnt more about the map of Israel in detail, exploring towns and interesting areas across the country.

Year 5 have had a busy half term. They had the privilege of welcoming the Israeli Theatre company who performed a wonderful and meaningful play called The Champion of Israel - אלוף העולם and learnt about the true story of Omer Smadja, the judoist who became an Olympic medalist. They learnt many words and phrases in Ivrit before the show to help them understand.
They have also been working on the topic 'Eych Ani Nirah' - How Do I Look?- איך אני נראה? . They learnt how to describe faces and people using adjectives and phrases such as יש לו - He has, יש לה - She has, יש לי - I have…. And are also able to use adjectives to describe people who are ‘tall’ גבוה, Short נמוך in both masculine and feminine. They created their own characters and described them using the vocabulary and phrases we learnt.
The last week of the half term was all about our special project ‘The Many Faces of Israel’. We focused on the aliyah of the Moroccan Jews since 1948 and the children listened to a speaker who spoke of her first hand experience leaving Morocco and making aliyah to Israel. They also learnt about their culture, jewellery and important symbols and recreated a Hamsa of their own. It was a truly wonderful and enlightening week delving into Israeli culture and learning a lot about this particular community.
