This week we marked Yom Kippur together at school. It’s the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, and a time for reflection, forgiveness, and new beginnings.
In the days leading up, we talked and learned about what Yom Kippur means, why people fast, and the importance of saying sorry and making things right. It was a chance to think about how we can be kinder and start fresh in the year ahead.
We hope everyone who fasted was able to do so well, and that the holiday gave us all a moment to pause and reflect. Here’s to carrying those lessons of compassion and focus into the weeks ahead!
This week our class has been learning all about biomes! We explored the different kinds of environments around the world, from deserts and rainforests to oceans and tundras.
To show what we learned, we each created brochures filled with facts, fun details, and illustrations about a chosen biome. Some students also drew colourful pictures showing the animals, plants, and landscapes that make each biome unique.
It was a fun way to be creative while learning how amazing and diverse our planet really is. Now we can proudly share our brochures and artwork to help others learn about the world’s biomes too!
In maths this week we’ve been exploring factors, multiples, and prime numbers. We started by learning how to find factors of different numbers and practiced spotting common multiples. We also had great discussions about what makes a number prime.
To extend our learning, some children created factor trees to break numbers down into their prime factors. This was a fun challenge that really helped us see the connections between numbers and how they can be represented in different ways.
Everyone worked hard and showed great perseverance in tackling tricky problems!
In English this week, we focused on building key skills for reading and writing. For comprehension, we practiced answering exam-style multiple choice questions. The children learned how to use a process of elimination to choose the best answer, as well as how to look back at the text to infer the meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary.
In writing, we turned our attention to creative work. The children wrote detailed character descriptions, thinking carefully about appearance, personality, and the little details that bring a character to life. Their imagination and descriptive language really shone through!
It’s been a great mix of practicing important strategies and letting creativity flow.
Questions to ask your child
Can you name three different biomes?
What is a biome?
Which biome did you create a pamphlet for? What can you tell me about this biome?
What are factors?
What are multiples?
Are all prime numbers odd numbers?
Can you name the first five prime numbers?
What are factors trees?
Who did you describe in your character description?

Year 6 Class Blog 19.09.25
This week has been full of exciting learning and memorable experiences!
We began the week with preparations for Wednesday, culminating in an amazing performance in the Rosh Hashana concert. The children sang beautifully and were a real credit to the school. Everyone worked really hard, and it was wonderful to celebrate together.
In English, we have been looking closely at The Highwayman poem. We explored its dramatic imagery and thought about how the poet creates suspense. We also continued reading Holes, making predictions and discussing the themes in the story.
In Maths, we focused on multiplication using the column method and moved on to short division. We practised interpreting remainders and even expressed them as fractions and decimals.
During our exam practices, our main focus was on reading questions carefully to make sure we understood exactly what was being asked before answering.
On Friday, we had a special Streetwise workshop all about leadership. We learned what it means to be a good role model and thought about how we can set positive examples in and out of the classroom.
It’s been a fantastic week of learning, creativity, and teamwork in Year 6!

MRS GREN POSTERS

Our First Full Week Back!
What a fantastic start to Year 6 we’ve had! Our first full week back has been busy, fun, and full of learning.
In English, we’ve been focusing on SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar). We’ve worked really hard to remind ourselves of the grammar skills we’ll need this year, and we’ve been learning about homophones -those tricky words that sound the same but have different meanings and spellings.
Some of the homophones we’ve looked at include:
there, their, they’re
your, you’re
to, too, two
which, witch
We practised spotting them in sentences and making sure we choose the correct one in our own writing. It was a good reminder that even though we might say the words the same way, we have to think carefully about which spelling makes sense in the sentence!
Alongside this, we began exploring the classic narrative poem “The Highwayman” by Alfred Noyes. We discussed the vivid imagery, rhythm and mood of the poem, and thought carefully about how the poet creates atmosphere. Inspired by the characters, we then wrote our own character riddles, using powerful clues and descriptive language to challenge our classmates to guess who we were describing.
In maths, we’ve been revising place value and practising reading, writing, and comparing large numbers. It’s been a good challenge but we’re already becoming more confident.
In science, we learnt about the characteristics of living things. To help us remember them, we created colourful posters using the acronym MRS GREN (Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion, Nutrition). The posters were a fun way to show our understanding and will be a great reminder throughout our topic.
In geography, the children explored different biomes from around the world. We learned about the climates, plants, and animals in each biome and discussed how humans live and adapt in these environments. It was fascinating to see how diverse life can be across our planet!
This week we also enjoyed our second Forest School session. We had another chance to learn outdoors, work as a team, and explore nature in different ways. Everyone loved the activities, and it was great to see how much more confident we felt after our first session.
We are also busy preparing for our Rosh Hashanah Live Concert, which will take place on Tuesday 17th September at 7:30pm. The children have been practising with lots of enthusiasm and we can’t wait to share their performance with you. Please continue to encourage them to listen to the songs that are on Google classroom and practise the words. In our music lesson, we played a fun interactive boom whacker activity where the children collectively played a simple tune.
It was also a real pleasure to meet so many parents at the Meet the Teacher evening. Thank you to those who were able to attend. For anyone who couldn’t make it, please find the slides attached below.
It’s only week one, but we’re already showing that Year 6 is going to be a year full of hard work, fun, and lots of learning.
